"Timaru, Tinwald, and the Tale of the Leeston Crash Award"

🏆 Most Memorable Race or Biggest Challeng e

My first Timaru 2-Day Tour—excruciatingly hard, evenly matched, and somehow, with a bit of luck, I surprised myself with a solid finish. Then there was the year I won the Tinwald Cycling Club Vet 2 category—a full-gas, all-out battle from start to finish against some determined riders.

But my toughest challenge? Coming back from a crash at Leeston that left me in a wheelchair for months. Silver lining? I won the Leeston Cycling Club Best Crash Award. (Not the silverware I was aiming for, but hey, a win’s a win!)

"Ride More, Suffer Less"

💡 Advice for New Racer s

Don’t train too hard—just enjoy long, easy rides so you stay fresh for race day. (Translation: less pain, more gain. And a valid excuse for coffee stops.)

"Stay in the Fight"

🔥 What Do You Love About Racing ?

The competition—fighting to stay near the front and not getting dropped. Doing this in your later years is tricky but incredibly rewarding. Plus, meeting fellow cycling nuts is a solid bonus. (Misery loves company, after all.)

"Hold Your Line… and Your Nerve"

🚀 Encouragement for New Racer s

If you're new to racing, learn to hold a wheel, hold your line, and lap off safely. Join a local group ride, watch some race etiquette videos, or better yet—jump into a Leeston or Tinwald handicap. That’ll teach you fast. (Literally.)

"Nowhere Beats Riding with My Boys"

😂 Funny Race Memorie s

My best memories? Riding in the middle of nowhere with my sons—or watching them race and improve. (Nothing like getting dropped by your own kids to keep you humble.)
