A bit of History

Time trialing on the Old Tai Tapu Road dates back to October 1981, when the first event attracted just 12 riders. Over the years, the course has become a training ground for some of Canterbury’s best time trialists.

In the early days, riders raced for short 23-minute times and subs were just $1 for the season. As time went on, the event grew in popularity, with up to 93 riders lining up in the 1990s.

The course has seen countless PBs set, skills developed, and riders preparing for national events. Now it’s your turn to see what you can do on this legendary route!

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, working diligently on your aerodynamics, or simply looking to push your limits and test your legs, the Tai Tapu TT offers an excellent venue to challenge yourself in a friendly, supportive, and no-fuss environment that encourages participation and improvement. This is the connect with others who share your passion, and enjoy the thrill of competition without any unnecessary pressures. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your gear, pin on a number, and let’s see what you’ve got!

Explore the Course

The Tai Tapu TT course is a 16 km out-and-back route that has been a favourite for time trialists in Canterbury since the early 1980s.

The course is known for being fast on the way out, often helped by a northeast wind. However, the return leg can be more challenging, with a dead road surface and the wind often shifting to a northerly breeze in the evening.

This makes the Tai Tapu TT a great training ground for learning how to pace yourself, hold an aero position, and deal with changes in conditions – essential skills for any time trialist.
